Stitch Don’t Ditch Sewing Workshop

With the fashion industry the 3rd highest emitter of global greenhouse gasses, and
clothing waste forecast to increase to 148Million Tonnes per annum by 2030, many are
turning to more sustainable options. Vintage and second hand are increasingly popular,
and upcycling is really catching on. Visible and invisible mending and repair are now
sought after skills.

In response to requests and to support building local skills to save textiles from going to
landfill, Transition Buxton is offering an evening sewing workshop on 20 May in St Ann’s
Centre on Hardwick Square, 7-9pm. Suitable for beginners, and those with some
experience of sewing.

A team of experienced sewers will be on hand to show you basic hand and machine
stitching, or to assist with a project you started but need some help with. Donated
materials, including some from things that charity shops can’t sell, will be available to
make into bags, bunting and brooches as easy starter projects. If you have materials
that you want to donate, or a garment that you want to repair, bring them along to the
informal creative session.

No fees but donations invited to help cover costs and for refreshments.
Jean Ball from Transition Buxton says “If this first Stitch Don’t Ditch session proves
popular, we have lots more ideas for different textile projects and workshops that we
could offer.”

Transition Buxton also has a limited supply of thermal curtain lining available. Can you
see the light through your curtains? If they let the light through, they also let the cold in.
If you’d like to get your curtains lined, and maybe learn a new skill along the way, email
inspire@transitionbuxton.co.uk with a rough idea of the length and width of your
curtains. This is a limited, first come, first served offer.
